Today we are talking dry, frizzy, over processed and damaged hair. It is hard not to have one if you use hair coloring and heating tools.
You know that you have damaged and dry hair when no amount of styling products or heat can conceal the dry brittle hair or when your partner notices and comments that you have burnt your soft and silky tresses ouch….it’s time to take out your magic/knowledge wand and put it to work.
The fact is that majority of us do not pay as much attention to our hair as we do towards our skin. We put it thorough lot of abuse and neglect. While we will continue to indulge in hair colors and other fun things there is a lot we can do to care for our hair.
There is a lot to hair care and I have realized that I can’t cover all of it in one single post. I will have to divide it in many multiple posts targeting few things at one time. So keep coming back!
Today we are talking very basic care that can help you get started on your healthy hair journey.
1. Pick a Shampoo for your hair type.
As simple as this sounds most of us are using wrong shampoo for our hair type.
Shampoo doesn’t need to be too fancy. In my opinion many of these magic shampoos are just simply hyped. Its main purpose is to clean and there really is no more to it than that.
Tips – Buy shampoo that is made for your hair type. No need to splurge, just get a nice sulfates free shampoo if you can.
- Avoid washing your hair more then 2-3 times a week and use dry shampoo in between washes. If you must wash more often than just clean your roots and avoid applying shampoo to your strands as much as possible. This will help avoid over washing dry hairs and make you feel less guilty about shampooing more often….now that was some tip. right? 😛
- If you like coloring your hair then choose a color-preserving shampoo that won’t strip out the color. These shampoos typically have the extra moisture that your processed hair needs.

2. Invest In your conditioner!
This is one most important product you need to invest in. This can make or break your hair. Conditioner adds shine and protect your hair from drying out. Your dry and damaged strand have been ripped out of moisture.
Tips – Contrary to the popular belief your scalp does not need any conditioner. You can avoid causing scalp irritation and greasiness by avoiding the same. Start from ear down concentrating more towards your mid section and ends.

3. Invest in good styling products
Styling products are also very important. Apply a good hair serum and a leave in conditioner while your hair is still damp. Many women make a mistake of waiting till their hair is dry. We tend to apply more products when dealing with dry hair. This not only weighs your hair down but also doesn’t spread evenly. Use a wide tooth comb to detangle your hair after applying styling products. This will be super easy if you have used right products.
Tips: Less is more. Avoid getting the product to your roots. Invest in a good hair serum/leave in and an Argan oil.

4. Styling without Heat
Did you know you can cut down on heat or completely ignore it by simply adding few basic hair rollers and styling when your hair is still damp?
I have long frizzy hair way past my shoulder blade. I not only create soft waves in them but wear them down every day without using any heat products.
Tips – Your hair take their shape when they are still wet. Once dried then you will either have to wet them again or use heat.
I barely spend 15 minutes styling my hair without heat:
- I add two rollers (no heat used) to my front bangs to create some volume and facial framing after applying all the styling products.
- Twist rest of your hair while they are still damp and let them air dry. Your hair take their shape when they are still wet.
This started with my fracture in December. I could no longer use any heating tools and had to make do with air drying. Can you tell I got the below waves without a curling iron or any heat?
Still love your straightener and curling iron? No problems – invest in good heating tools. Deep condition your hair and always use a heat protector.

5. Deep Conditioner
Deep conditioning your hair is a must for every hair type except oily hair. If you have oily hair then you can get away with using just a regular conditioner.
Tips – Deep condition your hair atleast once a week for best results. Putting a shower cap helps process it faster and more effectively.
